WEEK OF OCTOBER 21

There was movement on a few bills that are a priority for the NJFDC community. They are:

  • S1040: Exempts community gardens composting on-site from certain DEP permits under certain conditions. This bill was supported by all members of the Senate Environment and Energy Committee on October 10, 2024. For further movement on it to be made, it will need to be moved to the agenda for a full hearing of the Senate. Read more here.

  • A3899/S2200: Creates pilot program to provide corporation business tax and gross income tax credits for value of certain fruit and vegetable donations made by commercial farm operators. NJFDC supports this bill as amended. It joined NJ Farm Bureau and NOFA-NJ in doing so. It would create a pilot program for farms to get up tax break of up to $5000 per farm for donated items (produce/specialty crop). The total for the program is capped at $100,000. The pilot would start at 50% of the value of the donated product. This bill was unanimously supported by the members of the Assembly Commerce, Economic Development, and Agriculture Committee on October 24. Read more here.
