WEEK OF FEBRUARY 25
The Senate unanimously passed (38-0) a bill to combat food wastage through the S3889 bill. It has now been referred to the State Assembly. This would bill allows for public institutions of higher education to create and carry out a food waste reduction program on each campus of the institution. This bill was received by the Assembly and referred to the Assembly Higher Education Committee.
S3889- In February 2025, the bill mandates that public institutions shall develop and implement a food waste reduction program, and it should redirect unused, excess food prepared or distributed at campus dining halls, facilities, and events to local food security programs. Following the redistribution, institutions of higher education shall submit an annual report of the efforts to the Governor and to the Legislature and post their contributions on their website.
